For the first feature in our new behind-the-scenes series, TRAKKA Unpacked, we’re following the journey of Therese and Brad — two well-prepared travellers who recently took delivery of their new Jabiru J2M AWD, built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter mid-wheelbase platform.
The J2M is one of our most compact and off road capable self-contained models, featuring a two-seater layout with front swivel seats and rear single beds that can be used as day lounges, additional dining space, or easily converted to a double bed. It’s purpose-built for off-grid adventure, with an interior layout that balances flexibility, flow, and functionality.
Like many of our customers, Therese and Brad loved the base design — but had a few thoughtful ideas to make it feel more their own. The result is a smart, refined version of the J2M that reflects their style and travel goals, without straying from the proven DNA of the original conversion.
In the kitchen, they preferred the larger sink from our long-wheelbase model, so our clever R&D team adjusted the cabinetry to accommodate it while maintaining ample drawer storage and keeping the convection microwave. They also opted for a portable single induction cooktop, giving more bench space and easily cook indoors or outside depending on the setting.
Elsewhere, they made a few functional tweaks to support remote travel: a Clesana waterless toilet for less servicing, and a sliding shoe drawer integrated into the side door step — a simple, space-saving idea that makes everyday use easier.
They also chose a streamlined outdoor setup in place of the optional Alfresco slide-out kitchen. By utilising the side access hatch with composite bench top, we installed an external shower outlet and 240V power point, which supports induction cooking (great if you're not taking a heavier BBQ).
For power, they stepped up from the standard 400W roof-mounted solar to 800W, which is one of the reasons we keep roof design clear and uncluttered — to prioritise solar surface area. The J2M’s EcoFlow 48V electrical system supports this high-capacity setup while remaining compact and efficient.
Other core J2M highlights include a 150L fridge/freezer, 140L fresh water and 80L grey water tanks, rubber-backed woven vinyl flooring, acoustic wall and ceiling linings, side and rear insect screens, large LED lighting panels, opening windows in both the sliding and rear doors, and a roll-out awning with adjustable LED flood light. It’s built to go further, stay longer, and feel good inside.
From the optional features list, Therese and Brad also selected exterior lighting over the driver and passenger doors, a powered side step, underbody protection, 240V bladeless fan, and a diesel room heater — all designed to extend their comfort and confidence no matter where they travel.
But the standout custom feature? The upholstery.
They sourced Pendleton’s iconic Harding wool blankets, woven in Oregon, USA, and had them professionally retrimmed by a local Ulladulla upholsterer to cover the rear cushions, infills, and add pillow slips. It’s a bold yet tasteful finishing touch that brings warmth, personality, and a unique sense of home to the space. The structure hasn’t changed — but the feeling certainly has.
Therese and Brad’s J2M is a perfect example of what we aim to offer: a refined, ready-to-go conversion platform with just enough room for individual expression. It’s not about building from scratch — it’s about working together to tailor the details that matter.
