As part of TRAKKA's next-generation MY25 van motorhome lineup, we're excited to announce that all models will now come standard with 60V 460W roof-mounted solar panels. These panels are securely bonded to the roof with a protective layer of corflute and sit almost flush, providing a sleek and efficient energy solution for our motorhomes.
Why Volts Matter: The Efficiency of 60V Panels
While we've previously highlighted the wattage (W) of our solar panels, it's equally important to consider the voltage (V). Our new 60V panels offer greater efficiency in power conversion compared to lower voltage panels. Specifically, a 60V panel maintains optimal power conversion to a 48V battery system more effectively than a 32V panel.
Integration with the New 48V Electrical System
The new 48V electrical system in our MY25 motorhomes features two MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) solar charge controllers built into the electrical hub. These controllers can handle up to 4800W of solar input and are designed to maximise the efficiency of the solar panels.
How MPPT Controllers Enhance Efficiency
MPPT controllers continuously monitor the conditions and adjust the electrical load on the solar panels to ensure they operate at their maximum power output. They take the higher voltage from the 60V solar panels and convert it to the appropriate voltage for charging the batteries, while adjusting the current to ensure maximum power transfer.
Think of it like pedaling a bicycle uphill: you shift gears to find the easiest way to pedal while still moving efficiently. The MPPT controller does something similar for the solar panels, constantly finding the best "gear" to produce the most energy possible.
Benefits of Higher Voltage Panels
Using 60V panels in series provides 120V, which is more efficient for MPPT controllers than using three 32V panels to achieve 96V. This setup delivers better performance in low light conditions and requires fewer panels to achieve the same output compared to lower voltage panels.
Upgrade Options for More Power
While 460W is the standard offering across all models, we also offer upgrade options:
- 690W for Medium Wheel Base (MWB) and Long Wheel Base (LWB) models
- 920W for Long Wheel Base (LWB) models
Additionally, we have a substantial portable solar panel option on the way, providing even more flexibility for our travelers.
Enhanced Roof Rack System
Our solar setup is designed to integrate seamlessly with a full-scale roof rack and telescopic ladder, available across Fiat Ducato, Mercedes Sprinter, and Volkswagen Crafter van conversions. The roof rack features eight crossbars that can be slid along the roof or removed to allow for maximum solar input when not in use. Optional extras include storage boxes and board holders. The ladder stores compactly in the boot and is easy to set up and pack down, enhancing convenience and usability.
With these advancements, TRAKKA's MY25 motorhomes are equipped to provide a more efficient, powerful, and flexible solar energy solution, ensuring our travelers can enjoy off-grid adventures with confidence.
