If you’ve ever hit the Australian open road there’s a good chance you’ve seen the name Trakka along your travels. Developed from a childhood passion for adventure, this family owned and run business has become an award winning trusted market leader in the RV industry.
Founder and Owner Dave recounts, “When I was around 15, Dad purchased his first Kombi camper, one of the 1968/69 models. As soon as I got my licence, the adventures really started when I borrowed the camper and disappeared for days surfing up and down the coast or to the mountains for snow skiing. It sucked me in and from then all I did was breath outdoor adventure. The adventure mobile (at that stage mainly Kombis) enabled ‘going where you wanted when you wanted’. I discovered most Australians at some stage in their life were like me, with a dream of freedom travelling around our great & diverse country.”
And with that, Trakka was born.
Following its inception in 1973, Sally joined the business in 1975. Both self-taught in running a business (Dave previously a carpenter and Sally a biologist) the duo forged ahead, continuing to rapidly grow the business. Driven by a passion for business and adventure, in 1977 they purchased their first factory in Chatswood – the same year they were married and bought a house!
Throughout the mid to late 70s the market was broad with demand from diverse age groups; single younger guys in the surf scene, middle aged couples with young kids and retirees. While their requirements varied from weekend escapes to off road Australian adventures, they all essentially needed the same thing – comfortable self-contained living quarters on wheels, compact and easy to take just about anywhere.
Initially the Kombi camper was Trakka’s mainstay product however their production increased and broadened rapidly as they invented new standard and 4WD products.
During the ‘80s Trakka developed a large range of products to cater to the adventure-minded consumer and by 1985 had developed a line of specific built 4×4 campers to take to Australian Safari.
The late ‘90s saw Trakka commence development of Mercedes Benz van based motorhomes. These ultimate go-anywhere high performance luxury vehicles were, and continue to be, designed for precision drivability and comfort.
The new millennium brought with it the acquisition of new land and a custom built factory in Mt Kuring-Gai. By 2002 Trakka had established a relationship with Fiat and commenced development of the Torino, built from the best-in-class Fiat Ducato. Fusing high performance with luxury camping features the Torino was designed to drive people around town as well as off the beaten track.
By 2004, Trakka moved into the development of coach built motorhomes and within three years had continued to trail blaze with the release of their patented and unique Switch Mode Bathroom technology. Expertly designed, this cleverly executed cubicle offers spacious showering room with a unique remote controlled retracting cassette toilet under the vanity. When showering, the retracted toilet stays dry while a specially designed screen covers your towels, toilet paper and doorway.
Today, Trakka’s products are more defined and production based from ideas that have evolved over the decades. With 17 variations of pop-top campervans, van based & coach built motorhomes on offer, the team now attend approximately 10 exhibitions a year.
What began as a two-person venture motivated by the childhood memories of outdoor family adventure, has, with the care and determination of wife Sally alongside a growing team of 25+ dedicated staff, become an award winning business.
And while Trakka has taken many twists and turns along the way, one thing remains the same; this family owned and run boutique style business is dedicated to providing customers with ultimate campervan and motorhome conversions to safely accompany them on their travels…
